All The Girls Love A Soldier

by Tracey Curtis

on Picture Postcards (2006)

All the girls love a soldier they say
Marching home proud at the end of the day
All the girls love a soldier they say
I want to be loved that way

I felt so young at the start of it all
Boys from our town I remember from school
Eager to fight
Eyes shining bright
Standing tall
We played this game
It still seemed like game

All the girls love a soldier they say
Marching home proud at the end of the day
All the girls love a soldier they say
I want to be loved that way

Soon we were fighting and everything changed
Shooting at men who I thought I would hate
Enemy friend
In the end
Look the same
Scared wide eyes
I can't forget his eyes

All the girls love a soldier they say
Battered and cold at the end of the day
All the girls love a soldier they say
I want to be loved that way

Living with terror by night and by day
Heroes run forwards and cowards run away
Nothing seem real
I no longer feel
Any pain
I want to run
From what I have become

All the girls love a soldier they say
Hollow and cold at the end of the day
All the girls love a soldier they say
I want to be loved that way

I felt so numb by the end of it all
Boys from our town I remember from school
Those left to fight
Eyes without light
Wait to fall
Forever changed
Could never be the same

All the girls love a soldier they said
Crying and shaking and wetting the bed
Waking from nightmares that won't leave my head
Wishing that I was dead

All the girls love a soldier they say
Marching home proud at the end of the day
All the girls love a soldier they say
I want to be loved that way
