Gimme Some Light

Destitute Darlings

by Ryan Martin

on Gimme Some Light (2018)

It couldn't have been more than thirteen seconds
He put it together and he called it perfection
That's what I was thinking as I stared in your direction
You got some friends but I don't care with your goldfish eyes and vagabond hair
I was waiting in the corners
When your light crept in and impaled my eyes
Oh Mandy how much do you love me?
Is it sweeter than the waves of the California bays that once held me close
As a child?
We talked of harlots and I told you about these streets
And in the morning you took to the mirror like Holly Golightly
Now you're planting these visions of a lovers reverie
Two street corner singers, two destitute darlings
You left some coins from home for me
I said baby, cute currency.
Oh Mandy, how much do you love me?
Is it sweeter than the waves of the California bays that once held me close
As a child?
Now you're a carnival girl traveling the north country
Scrounging for love and fighting to be free
And I know I'll see you again one day in some deserted station reading
A half written novel we'll use our lives to complete
And I will reach out and touch your shoulder
And at that moment we will be free
Oh Mandy how much do you love me?
Oh Mandy can you say it in a way?
That would be sweeter than the waves of the California bays that once held me close
As a child?
I've been bored for a while
So let's get back in style, Mandy
