Fire of Unknown Origin

by Patti Smith Group

on Wave (1979)

[Chorus]
Fire of unknown origin
Took my baby away
A fire of unknown origin
Took my baby away

[Verse]
Swept her up and off me wavelength
Swallowed her up like the ocean
In a fire thick and grey
Death comes sweeping through the hallway
Like a lady's dress
Death comes riding down the highway
In its Sunday best
Death comes riding
Death comes creeping
Death comes, I can do nothing
Death goes there must be something that remains
Death, it made me sick and crazy

[Chorus]
'Cause that fire it took my baby away
