Losing My Religion

True Religion

on Losing My Religion (2015), American Folk Singers and Balladeers (1964)

Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed when I die,
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed when I die,
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed,
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed,
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed when I die?

Who's gonna take my soul to heaven when I die,
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven when I die,
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven,
Who's gonna make up my dyin' bed,
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven when I die?

O when I get that true religion, hallejoo!
O when I get that true religion, hallejoo!
O when I get that true religion,
True religion will carry me through,
When I get that true religion, hallejoo!

O when I get that true religion, hallejoo!

I saw Erik play twice at the Troubadour in West Hollywood in 1963-4, once with the Rooftop Singers and once by himself. In the audience were my friends Mike and Rich and me, and we hung around after his show were lucky enough to have Erik come out of the green room to show us how he played the song on his 6-string (a Martin 00-21, I believe). Standard tuning, and in A minor, with a bottleneck, and it was a revelation to me that slide was fairly easy in standard tuning when it's in a minor key! He was a mensch and a great musician and my music owes a lot to him.
