Fifteen Synagogues

by Eli Nathan

on Destiny ll (1988), Destiny Vol 2 (1988)

In their little town there were fifteen synagogues in all
Quite a phenomena for a town so small
In every shul there prayed just ten men and no more
There was no way that they would pray in the shul next door

Each synagogue was so sure that their's was the best
Why there couldn't be one finer among all the rest
When they'd walk by another shul they'd say with a grin
Hey that's one of the shuls I don't daven in

Well the town hadn't seen much rain as the year was going by
The wells were drying up and the throats were going dry
That's when they decided to put it to the test
Yes the synagogue that could make it rain surely was the best

They started off with Beth David, they stood and prayed all day
The skies remained crystal clear, pray hard as they may
But as the day wore on smug smiles disappeared
Soon fifteen shuls had come and gone and still no rain appeared

They waited in the town square beneath the sky so blue
The sun beat down upon them and they didn't know what to do
And one old man got up and said unto the rest
Let's all pray together now, no one here's the best

And softly like a whisper, voices were heard
As together they repeated word after word
And from that moment on the town was not the same
As the clouds began to form and it began to rain

In their little town there was just one synagogue, that's all...
