Come Here

Daddy Dear

by Cass Fox

on Come Here (2005)

I laid the table and I made the tea
For my brothers, my father, and me
My man was waiting out by the gate
To spend all his money on me

As I took my coat to leave the house
My father said to me

"Oh, Cassandra Fox, you can't go out tonight
Oh, shame on you, you're a lady, and not a tinker
Look, Lord, the way you're dressed
And the makeup on your face
You're a disgrace to yourself and your family!"

I held my tongue and I took the kiss
Up to bed, as I always do
I cleaned up, and my father watched
In the house full of drugs and anger

It's the Devil that leads you, guides and deceives you
You're just the same as your mother
And she was bad enough-peasant and a slut
And I'm seeing all the same things in you"

I took the key from her coat on the wall
And then I said
To him

"Oh, Daddy dear, drink up your beer
'Cause you haven't got a hope of keeping me here
I'll kiss you along, I'm not a little girl
And as for my mother
Oh, and as for my mother
Well, God rest her"
