Camden Town
by A. Clarke
on Bedrooms And Basements (2010)
[Chorus]
Oh, raise your glasses, hold them high
Tell all your friends and don't ya lie
'Cause the coppers said the bodies were never found
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
(Aye x2)
[Verse 1]
Well Johnny came to London from Colchester
With a head full of noise and a shit guitar
But of all the stops on the Underground
Johnny came off at Camden Town
[Verse 2]
Johnny picked a pub and he sat at the bar
Man came over, lookin' at his guitar
He had been a handsome one in his time
With jet black lines around his eyes
[Verse 3]
He said, "Johnny, do you know my name?
I can give ya riches, I can give ya fame
But first we're gonna play this, a little game
Line the glasses on the bar
The first round is on you, son!"
[Chorus]
Raise your glasses, hold them high
Tell all your friends and don't ya lie
'Cause the coppers said the bodies were never found
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
(Aye)
[Verse 4]
Well, one, two, three, the glasses went down
And nobody dared to make a sound
Four, five, six, the crowds started leaving
As Johnny and the Devil both started steaming
[Verse 5]
The Devil said, "Who do you think you are?
Another pretty boy with a shit guitar
And every last one of you leaves here pal
Floating head down in the canal"
[Verse 6]
Well, Johnny just left, he said, "In my hometown
There's nothing else to do but drink until you drown"
The Devil said, "Fine,"
His eyes were wide
"Line the glasses on the bar
Let's have another round son!"
[Chorus]
Oh, raise your glasses, hold them high
Tell all your friends and don't ya lie
The coppers said the bodies were never found
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
(Aye x2)
*Coughing*
[Verse 7]
Well, the Devil said his words with a sibilant hiss
And Johnny lit a cigarette, but Johnny missed
And the wood of the bar was split in two
But every time the Devil drank up, Johnny drank too
And the Devil rose up
The Devil rose high, said "I coulda made it, if I tried"
The Devil waved a gun around as he sang
Johnny made a finger gun and Johnny said "Bang!"
No one had ever lasted this long
Johnny didn't clap at the Devil's song
[Verse 8]
The Devil said, "You'll never be more than you are
Just another old man sitting at the same bar"
Well Johnny said , "Devil, now you're here too
So I guess I'm the same as you!"
The Devil cried out
The roof fell down
Johnny picked up two more glasses
Let's have one more round son!
[Chorus]
Oh, raise your glasses, hold them high
Tell all your friends and don't ya lie
The coppers said the bodies were never found
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
When Johnny met the Devil in Camden Town!
